About Allahabad High Court

The Allahabad High Court is a high court based in Allahabad that has jurisdiction over the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 11 June 1866, making it fourth high court to be established in India. The principal seat of the court is at Allahabad. It maintains a permanent circuit bench at Lucknow, the administrative capital of the state. The maximum number of serving judges is 160 (Permanent : 76, Additional : 84), the highest in India. Justice Govind Mathur is the Chief Justice of the Court.

Allahabad High Court was originally established in the British Raj on 17 March 1866 in Agra under the Indian High Court Act 1861. The first Chief Justice of the Tribunal established for the North-Western Provinces was Sir Walter Morgan. In 1869, it was transferred from Agra to Allahabad. On 11th March 1919, it was renamed ‘Allahabad High Court’. On February 25, 1948 the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed a resolution and it was requested by the Governor to the Governor General that the Awadh Chief Court Lucknow and the Allahabad High Court should be merged together. The result was that both the (chief and high) courts of Lucknow and Allahabad came to be known as ‘Allahabad High Court’ and all its activities started from Allahabad. A permanent bench of High Court was allowed to stay in Lucknow, which did not interfere in government work.

Allahabad High Court is authorized by constitution of India and Its decisions are appealed in Supreme Court of India. The office staff of court is broadly divided into four cadres : General Office Cadre, Bench Secretary, Private Secretary and Computer Cadre. It also works as a recruitment board and recruits their staff and officers by itself.
